Started in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the sole TLD planned for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level domains remained operational.
